Port Pirie Community Playground Schedule - Updated

Since August  2012, the Community Water Cart has not only been watering trees and vegetation in the community, but also cleaning Port Pirie kindergartens, primary schools and community and sporting club playgrounds on a regular weekly schedule. We've recently updated the Playground Cleaning Schedule to include extra playgrounds in the community. Please refer to the most recent schedule below or go to www.tlap.com.au for more information on ways to minimise exposure to lead dust, especially for young children.

Port Pirie Community Cleaning Program

Hazell Bros and Nyrstar Joint Sponsorship for New Community Water Truck

Nyrstar is committed to minimising exposure and reducing blood lead levels within the Port Pirie Community, especially in children aged up to 5 years.  It has a long term commitment to the community and recognises it has a vital role to play in improving children’s health and contributing to the long term sustainability of the community.

To deliver this objective, Nyrstar supports many community lead exposure minimisation initiatives, however one specific initiative to reduce dust around the Port Pirie Community was to introduce a new community water cart for wetting down, washing, cleaning and greening. The water cart, since August  2012, has not only been watering trees and vegetation in the community, but it has also been cleaning Port Pirie kindergartens, primary schools and community and sporting club playgrounds on a regular weekly schedule.

However since then the demand for cleaning had increased considerably and was at a point where a second vehicle was required to meet the demand. It was therefore positive, when Christan Wood and Darren Inches of Hazell Bros met with Nyrstar’s Communication Manager Gail Bartel in July 2014 offering to partner Nyrstar and support a community initiative, and subsequently it was decided a new vehicle for the Community Cleaning Program would be the priority.

Hazell Bros generously paid for the purchase of a new Hino truck, which was then custom fitted for the program and colourfully branded by Nyrstar to reflect its purpose; to make a difference to the health of young children and families. The water truck works in tandem with the existing water cart program, employing 3 operators funded by Nyrstar, further assisting in the reduction of lead dust exposure in the community. Specifically the additional water cart cleans footpaths and public seating in the CBD and high use areas and seating along the community bus route.

Feedback from the community regarding the additional cleaning has been overwhelmingly positive, with many business owners contacting Nyrstar directly to say thank you for the cleaning and the positive and friendly service being provided by the community cleaning cart operators.

Being able to access this additional community cleaning vehicle is a bonus for the entire community and specifically the new formed TLAP project which is a continuation of the previous “ten by ten” and “thumbs up for low levels” programs the focus of which is to support initiatives which assist exposure reduction initiatives and blood lead reduction programs in the community.

The chart below shows the cleaning schedule for the cleaning of the Port Pirie community's Bus Shelters, Town Seats and Footpaths, which is undertaken on a weekly basis.
